Literature Text

I hadn't had much success with the horse riding. Falling off a good five times before my uncle decided it'd be best to just take the truck across the way for now. Though, lessons were in order. The teasing never ended. My uncle threw around so many insults disguised as ignorance.

"You mean to tell me you city folk ain't ever rode a horse? How else you gon' get around?" He'd laugh, only judging my lifestyle further. At one point he even made fun of my purple hair. But when we finally arrived at the farm, he cut all joking short and got straight to business.

"You too inexperienced for herding, just feed them animals o'er yonder." He says, handing me an empty bucket, sending me on my way to an animal barn not too far away. I have questions, but before I can mutter a word, he's riding off to begin his work. Walking through the field is tough, but these boots--no matter how worn down they are--were made for this. It didn't take long to get to where I was going. And as I arrived, all my questions are answered. Animal feed is neatly organized in bins along the outside wall with labels so I won't get confused.

I decide to start with the chickens, as they're closest and already eyeing my bucket. Despite being new to the whole farm experience, I do know how to feed farm animals. Silently, I grab a handful of chicken feed and toss it on the ground. It doesn't take long before several chickens have come out of hiding. Smiling at their sudden reactions, I continue on to the next coop. The reactions are the same, though here a few of them start fighting. I panic, but only for a few minutes. I figure the only way to solve this problem is more food! So I throw another handful away from where they're fighting and am relieved when my plan succeeds.

I return to the wall of animal feed before long to refill my bucket. But this time, I'm feeding my uncle's turkeys. Though I don't get to that immediately. No, I hear the neighing of horses and have to see for myself. I walk into the barn which I now realize is actually a horse stable and am amazed. So many gorgeous horses waiting for their day to start. Mom had told me several stories of the days when she worked here. My uncle Roy made sure each horse was rode every day. Which wasn't really a hard task, as he had maybe eleven. Riding eleven horses in a ten hour work day didn't seem too hard to me. Especially when he has several workers.

Slowly, I approach a horse, holding my hand out before I pet it. "So pretty." I mutter.

"You must be the new girl. And that's Abbey." A male voice rings out from the doorway. Out of surprise, I jump and fall, laying in the hay that lines the barn, earning a fit of laughter from the boy who caused my scare. He's easily a year or two older than me, wearing basically what I'm wearing, minus the undershirt. His boots also seemed newer than mine, as well as his hat. "I'd heard you'd arrived not too long ago! Couldn't wait 'til noon to meet ya, so I finished lots of my work before I came out here to meet ya. Ol' man Roy told me you'd be out here. You find everything okay?" His voice was sweet. He'd lost most of his accent, but it still tried it's best to shine through his speech.

"Oh. Yeah! I'm doing okay. I was about to feed the turkeys, but... I heard the horses and I couldn't resist." I laugh nervously. He seemed sweet, especially considering he had rushed his work just to meet me.

"I'll tell ya what. How 'bout I do that, and you just follow me. Show you the ropes." He smiles, helping me off the ground with a sturdy hand. "Ol' man probably didn't show you much. When he hired me, he pointed me where to go and just ran off. I wandered 'round like a headless chicken for two days before someone corrected me."

"How long ago was that?" I ask. He seemed really experienced, going as far as to memorize the horses names. I was a bit fascinated with this stranger. He'd shown up out of no where and offered a friendly hand. The first friendly notion I'd received in a really long time.

"Bout six years ago." He smiles again, revealing all of his pearl white teeth.  "Names Hayden. Been working for your uncle since I was thirteen." We'd reached the wall with all of the animal feed, and he'd begun filling up the bucket.

"Oh, you're not Michael? I was told someone named Michael would be helping me adjust to the work place." I question, staying close by him as if I was afraid I'd get lost if I strayed a few feet away.

"Michael has school, but he gets out earlier than the rest of 'em. I graduated last year, so course, I'm here all day. It's worth it though. Good paying job is all I need." He says as he dips his hand into the bucket to toss the turkeys their food for the day. When we're done with the turkeys he begins to smile again. "Ya'know. I like talking to ya, Violet." He says, grabbing my hand and holding in his warm grasp. It's not too long before I find myself lost in his dark green eyes.
